If you are more interested in facts than in Brexiters’ smear about our organisation, please keep reading...
• Tory website Guido Fawkes published a short piece on Thursday aimed at the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, claiming that he had “used taxpayers’ cash to fund second referendum campaigners.” (referring to the3million)
• The piece was instantly shared on social media by Brexit supporters of all kinds, including the hard-Brexit campaigners at Leave.EU, whose founder is Arron Banks.
This is what the Leave.EU tweet looks like:
It is correct that we have received money from City Hall — not for campaigning, however, but for a service that we are already providing: an information hub for EU citizens living in London.
This information hub for EU Londoners has been set up to help the estimated 1 million EU citizens living in London, informing them about their citizens’ rights, and to mitigate the uncertainty caused by the referendum result.
It is also correct that we participated in the People’s Vote March in October 2018. Our message was clear, should — yes, should — there be a People’s Vote we want a ‘final say for all’, not being excluded from the franchise/vote again on a matter that deeply affects us.
The message that we must not be disenfranchised from a vote again SHOULD there be a People’s Vote is pretty clear from the banner we were carrying on the day of the march. Misquoting one of our spokespeople, Axel Antoni, and picturing us as a pro-Remain campaign group is disingenuous.
Over the last two and a half years we have been speaking to Remain as well as Leave politicians — gaining support for our ask of protection of our #citizens’ rights from both sides.
After all, it was never the intention of the Leave campaign to punish EU citizens already living in the UK. Quite the opposite. It was a shock to us that we had to battle so hard for something the Leave campaign said would not be a problem, our citizens’ rights.
Vote Leave campaign.
We hope this clarifies our position on Brexit and citizens’ rights.
If Leave.EU would like to understand more about our work and how we are helping the 3.6 million EU citizens living in the UK, they can get in touch with us. We would be happy to have a chat with them.
ps. Although the EU Londoners Hub is paid for and hosted in London, the information on it is relevant to all EU citizens in the UK. Have a look and find out more...🔷
