the3million on why it is time for EU citizens living in the UK to write to their local Conservative MPs before they choose the next British Prime Minister.

The race to number 10 is on and six candidates are left standing.

Together with Jane Golding from British in Europe, Nicolas Hatton from the3million wrote an open letter to all candidates for the leadership last week.

All of us can now help by writing to our Conservative MPs and asking them to only back a candidate who supports our rights.

We have been living with uncertainty about our rights long enough, and with every extension, the uncertainties are extended too.

The more personal your email or letter the better, but you may want to mention for example:

1. The Settled Status Scheme must be changed to a declaratory system with physical proof. In this respect, you can refer to the Windrush scandal. You can point out that this would set an example for the EU countries to offer the same to the British living there. Michael Gove has already committed to changing the scheme, and the other candidates should match that commitment.

2. Voting rights for both us here and the British in the EU must be preserved and extended to prevent unprecedented mass disenfranchisement of millions, as well as existing rights to stand in elections.

3. The UK Government must continue to press the EU on saving the citizens’ rights parts of the Withdrawal Agreement to prevent 5 million citizens becoming collateral damage in a no-deal Brexit.

For the above rights to be meaningfully protected, no-deal on citizens’ rights has to be taken off the table.

You can find more detailed information here, but remember, the more personal the better.

You can find who your MP is and their contact details here:

Take a few minutes this weekend and write, then let us hear if you get a response by posting the reply on Twitter (don’t forget to tag @the3million).🔷
