Dr Jonathan Chaplin’s brilliant poetic assault on Boris Johnson’s messianic ambitions.

First published in August 2019.

Ball came out of the scrum.
Shit. So now it’s Brexit or bust.
Suppress the spasms of doubt
Stiffen the spine
Steady the mastering gaze
Banish faint-hearts and nay-sayers
Crash through the barricades
Unite the tribe and, under my unbending will
Our truth shall make the nation free.

No more hesitation, deviation or repetition.
A new creative destruction must prevail
To scatter, upend, strike fear –
From which I’ll conjure order, dignity and ease
For Britain’s troubled, wearied soul – peace, be still.

So keen to please
To win acclaim for forward thrust
My destiny to steer the ship of state
To destinations as yet unknown.
The voyage is all – through storm and swell in me they’ll trust.
All Alpha and no Omega.

They need not see, nor can discern
The where, the when, the how, the why.
Our task, to forge a mythic path
To pride restored
With heads held high and hearts aflame.
And so to make them one again –
Binding their wounds, healing their shame
A fractured, fragile people
Faith now revived, eyes cast above towards a waiting world
Poised to rise in awe at greatness once more unfurled.🔷
