A wide range of people voted Leave in 2016 and it is wrong to treat them all the same, Danielle Yorks argues.

Please read all of this before jumping down my throat...

I live in a 70% Leave area. When you call Leave voters stupid, racist and bigoted, you are speaking about my friends and family. Yes! Only me and my Dad voted Remain in our family.

Do most of my family regret their votes? Yes, they do.

Do some Leavers have fecking awful views? Yes, they do.

Are all 17.4 million of them stupid, racist and bigoted? No, they are not.

When you make blanket statements about all Leavers being those things, you are just as bad as Leave voters who call you Remoaners, elites, traitors and worse.

The far-right are fair game and deserve your ire, so with those, knock yourself out.

What you say on social media filters through into real life. They see what you say about them and then people like me get the brunt of that because we are the minority in our areas.

The one time I wore a pro-EU top in my village, I was berated for thinking I was better than them. I never said that. You did.

I have also had many a good conversation with people about why they voted Leave. I have managed to get a few soft Leave voters to become Remainer now. I know there is not a campaign for Remain any more but if you want to Re-join at any point, you need these people on side.

What I am trying to say is that I don’t understand how you don’t get that.

I get you are angry. I am. I am furious about all of this, but my anger is directed at those who caused it, not those who blindly voted for it.

“But they voted Tory at the last election”, I hear you say. The Tories got 1.2% more votes than in 2017. Not much really, was it?

The lessons of the election are a post-mortem I am not addressing here.

If we are to move forward as a society and try to mitigate the worse of this, we must be a society together. No one is telling you to go out and hug a Leaver but we have a far bigger mountain to climb than the referendum now.

The Tories are coming for all of us, no matter how we voted. They are going to make us all suffer.

So, are you the type of person who cancels someone for how they thought nearly 4 years ago? Or are you a human being who knows that this is going to be bad, really bad and wants to help protect those who need it most?🔷
