These are the countries that rely the most on nuclear power.

First published in July 2020.

According to the 2019 World Nuclear Industry Status Report, no country is as reliant on nuclear energy as France. It operated 58 reactors last year, second only to the United States’ 97, and they accounted for 71.7% of total electricity generation. The U.S. reactors had only a 19.3% share of total electricity generation.

After France, the countries most reliant on nuclear power are all concentrated in Eastern Europe. Indeed, reactors generate between 50-55% of all electricity in Slovakia, Ukraine and Hungary.

Earlier this month, President Macron has appointed former green politician and nuclear critic Barbara Pompili minister for the environment. This comes after France set a goal to reduce its nuclear’s share of electricity generation from its current 70% to 50% by 2035.
