On Monday, our campaign to ensure that EU citizens living in the UK receive physical proof of their status achieved its greatest victory yet.
First published in October 2020.
Our commissioned research shows that digital-only proof of status would exclude huge numbers of EU citizens. Affecting their employment, tenancy, and basic access to services, such as banking, healthcare and governmental support.
Together, we took time to do this research, reached out to people across the country, got a whole host of high-profile and influential organisations on board to support and worked with tireless volunteers.
We have been overwhelmed with the support and response from you – our community – and thanks to your highly-successful letter writing, Peers in the House of Lords received more than 3,700 letters ahead of the debate, showcasing the concerns and personal stories of thousands of European Citizens living in the UK.
And thanks to your hard work, our fight for physical proof led to an amendment being tabled in the House of Lords on Monday night. The results are in: 298 votes for, 192 votes against – the amendment was passed with an overwhelming majority of 100 votes.
This is a huge achievement, but the fight is far from over.
We must now make sure this amendment is passed in the House of Commons – and this is no small feat.
The biggest challenge will be to persuade the Conservative majority of MPs to back the House of Lords amendment when the bill returns to the House of Commons next week.
For this, we need to step up the size and scale of our campaign to a level which has never been seen before. To overcome the Conservative majority in the House of Commons we need more volunteers, reach more UK citizens and rapidly expand our letter-writing campaign. We need to make sure Conservative MPs understand the legitimate concerns that EU citizens have over the flawed digital-only system.
We’ve won before – and we can win again.
We have seen the Government making U-turn after U-turn, and it only takes a few MPs to understand the strength of our arguments in order for a rebellion to start.
Our campaigning is clearly working, but it is resource-intensive, and we cannot do this without your support.
Please, donate to our fundraising appeal – every donation matters at this vital stage of the campaign - and this week is crucial.
Together, we can make sure EU Citizens receive physical proof of status, and ensure that no-one is excluded by employers, landlords or government support services.🔷
