With a second term, Donald Trump would have pushed to reverse the UK food and welfare standards. With Joe Biden’s win though, we have a chance to go further and make sure a UK-US deal helps people on both sides of the pond.

Joe Biden has been elected the next president of the United States, bringing renewed hope across the globe that we can work together for something better. And after four years of fending off a disastrous trade deal with Donald Trump, we now have a chance to get a deal that puts people first.
Instead of a deal that carves up our NHS, we can protect universal access to healthcare. Instead of watering down animal welfare rules, we can push for a deal that improves standards on both sides of the Atlantic. And instead of chlorinated chicken, we can make sure we keep great quality food on our plates.
But, if we want this to be on Biden’s presidential agenda from day one, we need to act fast. US lobbyists will have been counting on Trump’s deal to line their pockets – now that he’s out you can bet they’ll be prepping to push a similar deal through with Biden.
So let’s beat them to it. In our hundreds of thousands, let’s sign an open letter to President-Elect Biden. Let’s ask him to put people over profits, instead of negotiating a trade deal that's a race to the bottom on standards.
Will you take 30 seconds to sign the open letter now? Then, together, we’ll come up with a way to get it on Joe Biden’s radar as he kicks off his presidency.🔷
Here is the Open Letter:
Dear President-Elect Joe Biden,
Congratulations on your election win.
We know right now as you approach your first term, you'll have a lot on your plate. From tackling the Covid-19 pandemic, to coming up with a plan for Climate Change. But as tens of thousands of people across the UK, we wanted to talk to you about plans for trade deals between our two countries.
Over the last four years, we've been working to block a trade deal pushed by President Trump that would have put our National Health Service at risk, and lowered the standards of food and animal welfare in our country.
With your election, we see a chance for a reset. A chance for our countries to work together for a trade deal that benefits both of us. British people believe that no trade deal should give corporations more power than people. No trade deal should threaten our NHS - the institution British people are most proud of. And no trade deal should see a weakening of the standards that make sure the food we feed our families is safe, healthy, and ethically sourced.
So, as you plan your first term, and as part of that start thinking about trade deals you might strike, we're asking you to please work to negotiate a deal with our government that will lift both countries up.
Thousands of members of the British public.
