Another red wall seat falls to the party of government, leaving Labour out in the cold once more. The party may have to accept that many of its old seats are simply lost.
“Super Thursday” will see contests taking place for the Scottish parliament, the Welsh Senedd, English councils, city and city region mayors, police and crime commissioners, a Greater London Assembly and a by-election in Hartlepool.
Failing to hold the long-standing Labour seat of Hartlepool (in a region that delivered Boris Johnson a majority in 2019) would raise some serious questions about Keir Starmer’s strategy, credibility and electability.
The Remain Alliance is excited but, given the odd circumstances of this campaign, the Conservatives could have done a lot worse.
