The US has bought up most of the world’s supply of remdesivir. This type of treatment nationalism is nothing new, though.
Treatment nationalism, when a country uses its dominant economic position to monopolise an important drug’s supply, or ban its exports, is a threat to global public health. We must oppose it.
If Gilead doesn’t voluntarily forego the enormous benefits conferred by the global patenting system, individual countries should take action.
A simple head-to-head trial would resolve this conflict once and for all.
