On the misconceptions regarding asylum seekers pushed not only by anti-immigration activists and the media, but also the government. Reality is very different when you take the time to look at it.
Imagine my lack of shock at finding out that Nigel Farage either does not know, or does not care – quite possibly both – the facts related to asylum seekers in the UK, deportations, International Law, or Human Rights.
With the news Priti Patel is looking to reduce prison sentence required before deportation, it seems appropriate to remind everyone that we are talking about people's lives. People you may know. Everyone deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law. Deportation goes against that.
Asylum seekers cannot be penalised for their manner of entry. Not to mention that it is illegal to intercept and return refugees without hearing their cases.
We are seeing an increase in attacks on human rights in the UK. If we want to maintain some positive outlook, we need to recognise that we have to fight for them. We can make a difference in 2021, but we need to push for it.
Can there be true democracy without freedom of movement for all?
