What makes us comply with the rules? Behavioural economics holds some clues for how to enforce coronavirus measures. To really get everyone involved in preventing coronavirus, the government needs to communicate better and try to restore trust.
What happens when you elect someone like Boris Johnson Prime Minister? You get lies, deflection, a willingness to trash conventions and break the laws, broken promises and an undermined devolution settlement. You get a PM who blames everyone else for his own failures.
The government’s decision to televise daily briefings from Downing Street may not be as much of a commitment to transparency as it is claimed to be.
Was the government correct to think that adherence would fall over time? Perhaps.
The only way around psychological biases is more transparency.
